Charles Ponzi was an Italian swindler and the namesake of the Ponzi scheme. In the early 20th century, Ponzi promised investors high returns on investments in international postal reply coupons. However, he used new investors' money to pay returns to earlier investors, creating a fraudulent financial system. Ponzi's scheme collapsed when it became unsustainable, leading to his arrest and imprisonment for fraud.
